export saved logins from Mac Firefox

I find myself going around in a circle. On my Windows machine, about:logins gives me an option to export data. But on my Macintosh, there is no such option (Firefox ver. 78.15.0esr [64-bit]). This is a very old MacBook Air but Firefox tells me that it (Firefox) is up-to-date.

But this write-up tells me there is the same export option that doesn't exist.

How do I export this data unencrypted? Any file format would be fine.

What version of macOS is on the old MacBook Air?

It may be the case that the old version of Firefox on that device is as up to date as it can be for that device, but is too old to have the same options as in that support article.

Well, you undoubtedly have answered it since the Mac is from 2014 (OSX 10.11.6, El Capitan). Not very satisfying but at least I can stop searching for a feature that isn't there. So thank you for that.

Any clever trick for getting around this? If I move a file from the profile on Mac to my Windows machine, I ought to be able to export, I think. Which file or files would I need to copy?

The LoginExport.jsm module is present in Firefox 78, but hasn't been enabled and you need code in userContent.css to get the export menu entry in the cogwheel menu in about:logins.

It is not that difficult to create userContent.css if you have never used it.

The first step is to open the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" page and find the button to access the profile folder with the random name (xxxxxxxx.default-release).

You can find the button to go to the profile folder under the "Application Basics" section as "Profile Folder -> Open Folder". If you click this button then you open the profile folder in the Windows File Explorer. You need to create a folder with the name chrome in the profile folder with the random name (name is all lowercase). In the chrome folder you need to create a plain text file with the name userContent.css (name is case sensitive). In this userContent.css text file you paste the text posted. On Mac you can use the TextEdit utility to create the userContent.css file as a plain text file.

In Windows saving the file is usually the only time things get more complicated because Windows can silently add a .txt file extension and you end up with a file named userContent.css.txt. To avoid this you need to make sure to select "All files" in the dialog to save the file in the text editor using "Save File as".

You need to close (Quit/Exit) and restart Firefox when you create or modify the userContent.css file.

In Firefox 69 and later you need to set this pref to true on the about:config page to enable userChrome.css and userContent.css in the chrome folder.

Thank you, Cor-el. But before I wade into this....

My Windows Firefox does have the export option in the cogwheel menu and it works just fine. It is the Mac Firefox that does not. The only reason to open the Windows Firefox profile folder -- I think -- is to copy over data from the Mac. Can I copy a logins file from the profile on the Mac?

Or, if these instructions can conjure up the export option on the Mac, I will give them a shot.

You can copy logins.json and key4.db from the old Mac device to your current profile folder to transfer the logins. This will replace all current logins, so you may have to export the logins and import afterward.

Make sure that Firefox is closed via Exit/Quit before replacing the files.

Copying the files worked like a charm. Honestly, if this Mac were younger than nine years old, I'd be investing time in maximizing it's capabilities. But it's just not worth it.
