I can easily log on to my Hotmail account. The password works, otherwise I wouldn't be able to log on to my Hotmail account using Firefox. However, when I add the Hotmail account to Mozilla using the correct password, I receive the error message that the username or password is incorrect. What could I be doing wrong?

I think your Hotmail password is only for web access. You may need an APP password that is explicitly for Thunderbird. This is not a Thunderbird shortcoming, but several major email providers now require separate passwords for each email client a person uses. If you do a websearch for hotmail app password, I think you will see several explaining this.
