In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

As to the add-ons, Here are your choices; 1) Contact its support and ask if they will update 2) Find a replacement 3) Downgrade to a prior Firefox 4) Do without

I have not tried this.

Sorry to hear about the lost passwords. Were they stored in Firefox's built-in password manager, or using an extension?

Many extensions for password management have been updated. If you mention the one you were using, we might be able to help you find out where to get the update.

Sessions in Firefox 57

Can you restore your last session using either:

  • menu button > Restore Previous Session
  • menu bar (tap Alt to activate) > History > Restore Previous Session

The Session Manager extension wasn't updated for Firefox 57. There are some new session management extensions but they work differently and I don't know if they can pick up your old sessions. You can check them out:

Meanwhile, I have a tool you can use to extract out your previous sessions to a clickable list of links. Might be a useful backup in case you can't get the whole session loaded.

To find the old session files:

You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" (or "Show in Finder") button.

Firefox's Session History Files

Double-click into the sessionstore-backups folder. Save all files here to a safe location (i.e., some place Firefox won't replace them).

The kinds of files you may find among your sessionstore files are:

  • recovery.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your currently live Firefox session (or, if Firefox crashed at the last shutdown and is still closed, your last session)
  • recovery.baklz4: a backup copy of recovery.jsonlz4
  • previous.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your last Firefox session
  • upgrade.jsonlz4-build_id: the windows and tabs in the Firefox session that was live at the time of your last update

Session Manager Files

Back in the profile folder, double-click in the Sessions folder. Here you will find numerous files with a .session extension.

Note that the System Details list shows you use a Firefox 56.0b9 beta version that is outdated. You should at least use the actual Firefox 56 release or better the Firefox 52.5.3 ESR version if you do not want to use Firefox 57. It is not always safe to downgrade a profile used by Firefox 57+.
