Firefox not working in Windows 8

on startup, firefox not working, getting 'unable to connect' message. My internet connection is fine (internet explorer works perfectly), firewall is allowing firefox (have checked it twice), I made no changes and did not see any updates either to firefox or my system since I shutdown last night. No idea what could be causing this, have asked for IT to check network, so no idea if it something where I am working or not - please help me troubleshoot.
