I went and read the article on how to reset Mozilla Firefoz so it isn't so slow anymore, but,. I am WAY too technilogocally illiterate to comprehend all the stuff it says about saving my favorites and other things. I am truly sorry to be asking something most people find easy but, Pretty Please, can someone write back with SIMPLE step-by-step instructions on how to reset Firefox and keep my stuff? And, then, how to put my things back once it's reset? Thanks SO very much for your time and consideration.

Hello,

I will try to explain it in simple steps to you and if you still dont get it, feel free to ask again.

Follow the following steps:

1. type "'about:support"" in your address bar(where you type web addresses, eg: google.com) and hit Enter to bring up the Troubleshooting information page.

2. Click the Reset Firefox… button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page.

3. To continue, click Reset Firefox in the confirmation window that opens.

4. Firefox will close and be reset. When it's done, a window will list the information that was imported. Click Finish and Firefox will open.

Remember:

Firefox will save these things:

   Bookmarks
   Browsing history
   Passwords
   Open windows, tabs and tab groups
   Cookies
   Web form auto-fill information
   Personal dictionary

These items and settings will be removed:

   Extensions and themes, website-specific preferences, search engines, download history, DOM storage, security settings, download actions, plugin settings, toolbar customizations, user styles and social features will be removed.

Hope it helps.

Have a good day ahead.

In what way is Firefox running or responding slow?

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Instead of a reset then you can also try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works better then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Thanks SO much for the instructions. I have to print them to follow them and I am slow. Please, don't think I have given up...I WILL reply again once I have tried to do as suggested. Again...THANK YOU!!!!!

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backup of files that you choose.

OPIE {web link} Import/Export extension preferences

I was successful at resetting my Firefox. Thank you! Now...can you tel me how to re-add the items removed in the same step-by-step Manner Talha? That would be AWESOME!!!

Hello again strshne,

Its good to know that you were able to reset your Firefox. Now, lets try to restore some of the items removed. Follow the following steps and if you face any problem you can get back to me. Lets start:

1. The reset feature works by creating a new profile folder for you while saving your important data. Firefox will save these things:

   Bookmarks
   Browsing history
   Passwords
   Open windows, tabs and tab groups
   Cookies
   Web form auto-fill information
   Personal dictionary

so I suppose these folders are already in your new folder. You can check it by typing "'about:support"" in your address bar and clicking open folder button. Clicking open folder will open your profile folder. you can additionally also open profile folder through your operating system, C:\Users\your_user_name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles. You will see that they are two profiles one is new, which your firefox is using now and one is old, which your firefox used earlier .

2. Now, you need to Copy files between profile folders (that is from old to new folder)

Note: Firefox must be closed down while copying files between profile folders.

3. Right-click on a file you want to copy and choose Copy.

4. Open the new Firefox profile folder.

5. Right-click inside the profile folder and choose Paste

Repeat steps 2-5 for each file you wish to transfer over to your new profile folder.

Your important data and their files

  * Bookmarks, Downloads and Browsing History : places.sqlite
  * Passwords : key3.db and signons.sqlite
  * Site-specific preferences :  permissions.sqlite
  * Search engines : search.json
  * Personal dictionary :  persdict.dat
  * Autocomplete history : formhistory.sqlite
  * Cookies : cookies.sqlite
  * Security certificate settings :  cert8.db
  * File types and download actions : mimeTypes.rdf

Note: Some of these files may already be present in your new profile so you dont need to copy that and Firefox must be closed down while copying files between profile folders.

Hope it helps.

Hi again! As before, I'll get back to you as soon as I've printed and followed your instructions! You ROCK Talha!

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile Be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Thank You strshne for the acknowledgement.

But I will more happy once you try those steps and it works.

Lets hope for the best and have a good day ahead.

Hi Sweetie, bummer...went to about:support and there were to items I could click on the left-ish side of the page. 1 was to copy raw info to clipboard and the other was to copy text to clipboard...but, I don't know which is which. Plus, once the reset was going, a folder appeared on my desktop which I thought were the things it had to save due to the reset. I'm confused...forgive me please!

It is best to click the second button to copy the text to the clipboard on the about:support page.

The first button copies the troubleshooting information in JSON (JavaScript Object Format) and is no easy to understand.

It you already have reset Firefox then you will get the information from the new profile and not from the previous profile that has been moved to the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop.

When you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported and the current profile folder will be moved to the desktop to an "Old Firefox Data" folder. Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.

It is possible to recover data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

No problem strshne,

Lets try to do it again. Lets begin:

1. go to about:support

2. To open your profile click show folder which is 5th item under Application Basics which is just below copy raw info to clipboard and to copy text to clipboard option

3. As cor-el said, "If you already have reset Firefox(which you have) then you will get the information from the new profile and not from the previous profile that has been moved to the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop.That means your old profile is moved to the desktop and is named "Old Firefox Data" (it may be the folder created you mentioned about).

4. Now, you need to Copy files between profile folders (that is from old to new folder)

Note: Firefox must be closed down while copying files between profile folders.

Right-click on a file you want to copy and choose Copy.
Open the new Firefox profile (the folder you opened through show folder on about:support) folder.
Right-click inside the profile folder and choose Paste

Repeat steps 2-5 for each file you wish to transfer over to your new profile folder.

Your important data and their files

 * Bookmarks, Downloads and Browsing History : places.sqlite
 * Passwords : key3.db and signons.sqlite
 * Site-specific preferences :  permissions.sqlite
 * Search engines : search.json
 * Personal dictionary :  persdict.dat
 * Autocomplete history : formhistory.sqlite
 * Cookies : cookies.sqlite
 * Security certificate settings :  cert8.db
 * File types and download actions : mimeTypes.rdf

Note: Some of these files may already be present in your new profile so you dont need to copy that and Firefox must be closed down while copying files between profile folders.

Hope it helps.

Hey Talha...I am SO sorry. I am still confused about a couple of things. 1 - How can I know what the items in the "Show Folder" folder are? And, 2 - I have no idea where you are directing me to paste them. I know it's the folder from "Show Folder" or the 1 that the "Show Folder" is in? But how to open or even find it has escaped me! Thanks SO much for your amazing patience...I am so sorry I am such a techno-tard!

You can look at this knowledge base article to find more information about the meaning of the various files in the Firefox profile folder.

To copy and paste files between profiles you would have to open both folders in two instances of Windows explorer and use copy and paste to copy files from the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop to the current profile folder. The latter can be accessed via the button on the Help > Troubleshooting Information page. You need to close Firefox via the close (power) button at the bottom of the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list or File > Quit in the File menu (tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar).

TALHA...please reply? I'm not sure of what the "right click..." under step 4 means nor how to tell the difference between folders. Thanks TALHA!
