Currently (with the search bar field hidden), pressing control-K goes to google.com/firefox. How do I change this to go to just google.com?

This happened

Every time Firefox opened

== Always

Hello Matt.

You can change your homepage by going into Tools > Options > General.

Also, if you want to change what the keyboard shortcuts do, there this very handy extension called keyconfig that lets you do it. It's not in Mozilla's gallery, but it's perfectly safe from my (throughout) experience.

That is the default search engine as set in the Google search bar on the Navigation Toolbar. See Search bar - add, change and manage search engines on Firefox

Morbus,

It isn't the homepage that I'm concerned about. Right now, my homepage is set to Google.com, but when I press control-K, I still see the Firefox version of Google.

Cor-el,

The control-K behavior doesn't change when I change the behavior of the search bar. Normally control-K jumps to the search bar, but since I have it hidden, it jumps to the search page. However, it goes to the Google one no matter what. I just want to change the default URL.

You can set the Search engine name via this pref: browser.search.defaultenginename Copy the value from browser.search.selectedEngine to browser.search.defaultenginename

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

This still doesn't help, this only lets me change the default search engine. How do I change the actual URL? I don't want Google.com/firefox, I want Google.com

You should make Firefox use another installed search engine to do the search. You can't set the location directly, you need to specify the name of one of the available search engines.

The link to the solution is broken now, so I'll rewrite the solution.

To change the Ctrl+K url from google.com/firefox to just google.com, open the installed directory (C:/program files for windows or /usr/lib/ for linux), find plugins, searchplugins, find google.xml and edit it with a text editor.

(this description is NOT about how to change your search plugin, NOT about how to turn it off or on. This works ONLY if you have have removed all search plugins from view but still press Ctrl+K.)
