Changes made to contacts in address book are lost the next time I startup Thunderbird.

I have Thunderbird on laptop. I make changes to a contact in the address book and they seem to be made. When I close Thunderbird and restart it, all changes are lost and are back to what the contact information was before. This has to be fixed.
