The page you are directed to in order to update plug ins (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/) just hangs, showing the 'thinking' spinning disk for eight hours without doing anything. How can I skip this page and directly install the plug in update?

Version 8 Update 51 was released on July 14, 2015 Get it here: https://java.com/en/download/
You could also try updating it thru the Windows 7 Control Panel.
I find that Plugin Check page a bit misleading, as far it sounds like Mozilla is able to "update" all sorts of plugins. At best it can send the user to a download page and at worst it can say "research" and not give the user any semblance of what they are to "search for". IMO, "put up or shut up" - do the update with the push of a button, but don't lead me down the garden path and not deliver what "I expect". Plugins like Java and Flash (the two plugins that are most frequently exploited these days) have their own internal updater and should be able to take care of their own updates, as long as the user doesn't disable the update check. The problem comes about when, as has happened with Flash frequently over the last year, so many new versions are released due to security faults with Flash that the monthly check for an update doesn't work too good for users when there are two or three new version that are released within weeks of each other. Similar with Java, but it isn't as widely used as Flash on websites [I haven't even had Java installed for a couple of years now] and not as many users need Java. That said try to locate a Check for Updates button thru the Control Panel > Java -> Updates (or something like that).

Which plugin update?
How about running a Firefox update? Your "details" indicate you're running Firefox 31.0, while the current version is Firefox 39.0.
Hi edmeister
I'm running Firefox ESR 31.8.0, according to the Firefox dialogue it is up to date with the latest version available.
I'm trying to update the 'Java (tm) Platform SE 8 U45 11.45.2.15' plug in. I go to the Add-Ons Manager, click Update Now, https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/blocked/p960 opens in a new tab and asks me to update on http://www.mozilla.com/plugincheck/ - but this page never shows me any updates to install, just the loading circle.
Appreciate any assistance you can give me.
Thanks
Regards Scott
hi scott, please see if you can resolve the problem on the plugin-check page when you go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > plugins & set the "java deployment toolkit" to never activate and then reload the page?
HI Philipp
It's already set to Never Activate I'm afraid, no change required.
Regards Scott
ok, then i don't know why the plugin check page isn't functioning correctly. you can also download the latest version of java directly from https://www.java.com - please make sure to decline any third-party offers during their setup process...

Thanks guys
I updated through the Java Control Panel and the Add On Manager is now up to date.
Thank you for the assistance.
