Most other email clients I've used have had a way to manually "expunge" a mailbox, i.e. delete the messages which are marked for deletion. This includes Thunderbird on a machine at home (I'm traveling right now).

On this laptop I'm using Thunderbird 102.12.0 on macOS 26.6.2. All of my mailboxes use IMAP. Thunderbird is using Maildir for local storage on this laptop, and I believe the same is true on the machine at home (also macOS 26.6.x, not sure of the exact Thunderbird version), but I won't be able to verify this until I get home tomorrow evening.

On both machines, when I delete a message, the message list shows that message with a line through it, corresponding to the IMAP "marked for deletion" flag. The same is true on the other email clients I've used over the years.

On the machine at home , when I right-click on an account's "Inbox" folder, there is a "Compress folder" option which expunges the deleted messages from the mailbox. This option is not present in Thunderbird on this laptop.

So my questions are ...

• Is the menu item I'm talking about, only present when the account uses MBOX for local storage, and maybe I missed a step when I created the account on the machine at home? (If so, I know how to fix that when I get home.)
• Every email client I remember using, all the way back to the original `pine` in the mid-1990's, has had an "expunge" command of some kind. Does Thunderbird really not have a way to manually expunge a mailbox? If so, this seems like a fundamental oversight on the part of the Mozilla developers.
• Or is there a way to do it, and my old eyes just aren't seeing it on the menus? (which is entirely possible)

(Side question, totally unrelated) ... why does the text entry control I'm typing this message into, have its own markup language instead of using standard Markdown? (And yes I am, at least in part, being old and gumbly here ... you kids get off my lawn!)

I am struggling to set up calendar and contacts sync between Thunderbird (v155@ubuntu26.04) and my google account. I use a university account to access google services, so my google account is not some.name@gmail.com but some.name@myuniversity.cz. I understand that Thunderbird somehow needs to invoke OAuth2 process with google, but I do not know, what to fill in the "Hostname" or "Location" fields for Contacts and Calendar, respectively. Any help? Thank you.

I have three AOL accounts for various reasons. Until recently, all three were available and working in Thunderbird - no issues. A few days ago on start-up, I had a pop-up requesting indicating that my password for one of these accounts had not been recognised in Thunderbird. The account was working fine on another device, ipad. Re-entering the password didn't give me access to the account, and in desperation I deleted the account from Thunderbird. I then tried to re-create it, but although Thunderbird shows all the correct(?) details in the account settings, it actually just gets all the ...box contents from another of my accounts. Does anyone have any ideas how Thunderbird references existing account when add a new mail account, or how to stop Thunderbird referencing an existing account please?

I moved emails from my inbox to three different folders, including my deleted folder. All have disappeared and I don't know where to look to find them. I thought it might just be the system being slow so exited and re=entered. But the emails have still not shown up in the folders I moved them to. Any suggestions as to where to look or how to recover welcome.

I am trying to add my new email address to the thunderbird app for Windows and running into issues syncing it through IMAP settings. The process seems to go smoothly until it gets to the point where I have to enter my email password. After I enter my password and hit "continue" I get the following error message:

Component returned failure code: 0x804b000a (NS_ERROR_MALFORMED_URI) [nsIIOService.newURI]

I have attached the screen shots of my process, as well as the IMAP and SMTP settings from my email provider.

Any help I can get in troubleshooting this error would be greatly appreciated.

I am in the midst of the long process of moving most (not all!) of my gmail from the gmail server to TBird, using filters as discussed in this thread.

I've started by first using filters on less important emails (ie so that no true disaster occurs if something goes horribly wrong). As I do so, I have questions!

For example, let's say I use a filter to: copy all the emails from @someone.org to a local folder then delete those emails (from the server)

What happens if one of those emails happens to be within a thread, including emails from people who don't match the filter (ie are not @someone.org). Have I broken the thread forever, ie, has something gone horribly wrong? If so, how do I prevent this behavior/have the entire thread move along with the targeted value? If not, I don't see how I can move email without breaking threads, which is a bit of a problem.

(Also - whoops, I see I should update, but the question remains.)

My correspondents keep getting shuffled and applied to the wrong subject line in the inbox. It was suggested that I right-click on the folder, select "properties" and then "repair." That clears it up, but only for a matter of hours. Plus, any emails that I have open get closed and then I have to find them again.

One person who suggested that I right-click the folder and repair it said if that didn't work, there was a more technical fix. I need it!

Lately I am seeing duplicate folders in Thunderbird when connecting to gmail. Does anyone know why/how to clean this up?

The folders shown in Thunderbird don't match what I see in Gmail. Attached are images of both views. Why are "Spam" and "Send" duplicated?

Thunderbird 128.7.1esr (64-bit) on Windows 10 PC. Upon going to my Sent Folder, I find only 2 emails (both sent today) rather than the several thousand that were there previously. This may have occurred due to a power outage system shutdown. Regardless of the cause, the problem exists. I tried to compact the folder with no success. I tried to repair the folder (under folder properties > general information > repair folder) with no success. Still only 2 emails are shown in the Sent Folder. BUT the emails still exist, because when I use the Quick Filer to search for a person to whom I've sent emails, the old emails show up! So how can I get all these "invisible" emails to be visible in the Sent Folder? Thanks for your help on this! Rich

In my imap email account I have a folder called Archives which has several subfolders, named by year, where I have been archiving messages for years. All the folders are still there but they are empty. I can't be sure of when this happened. Any ideas?

Adding new account along with an existing hacked account. I get to the screens to add and there's a rejection, first because the imap host already exists and finally because of Authentication error. "Could not get OAuth2 details for hostname=imap." Tried every combo possible (except the right one!) and I still can't complete the addition. Help!!

I am unable to add my Outlook email account to Thunderbird Desktop. I keep getting an authentication error when entering the Outlook password which I know is correct. Adding my Gmail account was no problem.

I am using Thunderbird 140.12.0esr 64 bit under Linux. I was obliged to change my Gmail password. I deleted my Gmail account from Thunderbird. I than proceeded to Add a new account and entered my Gmail account and new password. A blank window popped up: 'https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2/auth?response_type=code&client_id=406964657835-aq8lmia8j95dhl1a2bvharmfk3t1hgqj.apps.googleusercontent.com&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2Flocalhost&scope=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2F+https%3A%2F%2Fwww.googleapis.com%2Fauth%2Fcarddav+https%3A%2F%2Fwww.googleapis.com%2Fauth%2Fcalendar&login_hint=gizzenbriggs%40gmail.com' I suspect that this is from Google asking me to confirm my password. Unfortunately the window is blank and I cannot enter anything. Consequently I cannot add a new email account to Thunderbird.

When replying to an email, I type the first line of text in the text field and then paragraph (carriage return) using the ENTER key. This causes the first line of text to disappear. This has been happening all day today, several times. Closing and reopening Thunderbird does not solve the problem. Rebooting the device does not solve the problem.
