firefox crashes on opening within seconds. this started suddenly a few weeks ago and despite several daily attempts, i still can't load firefox application. it crashes immediately upon startup every time no matter what and crash reporter arrives. i have researched all the articles and followed their suggestions. i installed the newest version of firefox and still get the same results. i can't even open firefox in safe mode.

Heather, not sure I can help,I am not a Mac user, but I will have a quick look at the crashIDs you provided,
Update:
- Crash ID report: [6326058f-1fca-4d4d-a080-af8902120119]
- signature: TFont::CreateFontEntitiesForFile(char const*, bool, TSimpleArray<TFont*>&, bool, short, char const*)
- Crash ID report: [69534b6f-7662-4c09-bf2e-39fff2120104] signature as above
There are very few recent crash reports with that signature, they could even all be your crashes. If you have followed the suggestions in the article I linked above there is not much that can be done easily. You should try to rule out that the cause is malware, by scanning with multiple updated tools.
Malware checks Have you seen and followed the advice
- Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware
- the first step is trying to detect malware, a typical suggestion is this post from the-edmeister /questions/914980#answer-302372
Clean Reinstall If you do not find malware, it may be worth trying a clean re-install and a clean profile, neither of these are straightforward, and need to be done with care, so try the malware scans first, those will take a while to sort out.
Rather as a last resort: file a bug
If you are prepared to try to answer the inevitable questions, and have an anonymous email account you can use for registration you can follow the report link above and click on "report it" to file a bug about the crash.

Leah by all means read the tips in other threads and the articles they link to but please start your own question, reading after reading and trying to follow the advice in firefox crashes

hi john99! thank you for taking the time to respond and making efforts to help. i think i have read everything on this site and the internet trying to figure out what happened and how to resolve it. i have done a clean install and the same issue happens. i also created a new profile with the same results. i left those to a near last resort since i really didn't want to lose all my bookmarks and passwords. (i have made a backup but haven't gotten firefox running yet to attempt to bring them back in). i have almost 100 crash reports from january 4th to today and don't bother submitting them anymore. the random ones i checked all looked like the said the same thing about bad_access/kern_failure. i have done nothing new (or added anything new) in the time frame prior to these crashes. it is just so bizarre as i have no problems with any other program/application. it is specific only to firefox. i have no issues with safari and i downloaded google chrome last night (i'm on that now and not seeing any problems). i looked into malware and i am not experiencing any other problems but the crash on startup. if something had come in and infected firefox, wouldn't that have been taken care of when i did the clean install?
Hi Heather,
Sorry I do not know the reason for your crashes. Most of this advice may now be rather late. When you did the clean re-install did you delete edit your program folder used by firefox as explained here:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Clean_reinstall
follow instructions provided in the next post by finitarry (I guess the Mac version of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Basic%20Troubleshooting#os=mac&browser=fx10 then https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Basic%20Troubleshooting#w_7-reinstall-firefox )
So as not to loose bookmarks you should back then up, and it is also worth making a copy of you profile folder, along with all files it contains, that includes the working bookmark database places.sqlite and also a further bookmarks backup folder. Easiest way of locating the profile is to use
- Firefox button -> Help -> Troubleshooting -> [open containing folder]
- see also backing up and restoring bookmarks
I do not understand your problem, so unless someone else posts an answer it is probably best to try filing a bug. I would from the signature hazard a guess that it may relate to your Mac OS and the fonts it uses. Have you been making changes that may result in the OS using different fonts ?
You do not want to remove the program directory with a Mac because Firefox is most likely installed in the system Applications directory which is where the system applications are stored.
Have you tried removing the Firefox plist file from your user library? I have Mac OS 10.6.8 as well, and that file is at /Users/<user name>/Library/Preferences. Close Firefox and remove that file, then start Firefox again.
hi! sorry for the late reply - i had spent an exhaustive amount of time over the past 6 weeks trying to remedy this and had to "walk away" from it for a while - it has been so frustrating. yes, i deleted everything i could find related to firefox and also the profile folder to start over and it did not help. i also removed the firefox .plist in my pref folder. as to the fonts, i don't think i added or changed anything in that regard anywhere around the time that these crashes began. it baffles me that removing firefox entirely is not resolving the problem. i have no issues with safari or google chrome (recently installed due to my firefox crashes). i am going to start anew today and will keep you posted... i appreciate your efforts!
i searched every single folder on my entire hard drive and found 3 random files with mozilla or part of the word mozilla in them and deleted them. i shut down the computer and restarted it a few hours later. i downloaded firefox 10 (even higher version than the one i was updating to a month ago) from google chrome and installed it. get this... IT'S WORKING NOW! since i exhausted every angle throughout january and early february, i really can't pinpoint what made the difference today but again i appreciate your input and efforts to help! thank you!
Glad it worked out even if we do not know what happened. Thanks for posting back
I do not know if it could be possible the problem could relate to some problems with permissions of font folders, but unfortunately all I am doing is grasping at straws, and do not understand Macs.
