Certain websites render words into unreadable gobbledy-gook.

For example, at tv.com, all the headlines down the middle of the homepage show up as unintelligible characters. Same with the search box there. This happens at a bunch of other websites, too. Why?

I'm using Firefox 3.6.10.

Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead. You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.

Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.

Thanks, cor-el, that other thread solved my problem. Turns out I had a Helvetica font that was the problem. I deleted it and now all is well. Thanks for your help.
