Gmail creates the app password, not you. I suggest you go to settings>privacy&security and highligh the rows for the account an delete them and then click to retrieve messages. Also, be sure that you have thunderbird set to accept cookies. When gmail prompts for password, enter your password and gmail with verify and then place an app password in thunderbird. that app password works only from that one pc.
