
Activity Manager Always Busy
Performance manager always seems to have a green line doing something
Always indexing/sending - mention of 11,000 messages etc etc
Determining which items to index in Sent....
Is this using resources unnecessarily ?

No it is probably struggling to complete because you have an antivirus product scanning each file as it is opened slowing things to a crawl. This is one of the reasons I recommend creating an exception in antivirus product for the Thunderbird profile folder.
However having said that it can also be a sign of a corrupt global index and a rebuild of that never hurt. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/rebuilding-global-database
