I need help. I've tried every option (under forums) to delete un-wanted folders from my email account and have had no success. Can someone please assist?

I have gone to Mozilla forums and tried every option to delete folder from my email. They simply won't delete. They are taking up way too much space and are just simply not needed. How else may I go about deleting?

There are about 9 to 10 folders that will not delete. Please advise. And thanks in advance for your time.

Please supply a bit more info to understand your setup.

The folders you want to delete: Are these folders in a POP or IMAP account or in Local Folders ? Are they folders you created?

I created the folders but ultimately, no longer need them. And they are set-up in an IMAP account.

If they are empty just unsubscribe. And delete them on server using webmail.

Did you unsubscribe from seeing the folder before attempting to delete?

If the folder is no longer on the server, then attempting to unsubscribe will return some kind of error. Do you get that error message because you have already deleted off server?

Thanks for your response.

I've tried all of the above and have had NO luck. If I go to the original email source (which is set-up on go daddy) the folders do not exist. They are only on Thunderbird. When I delete or unsubscribe from the folders on Thunderbird it says the command did not succeed. At times I've been able to delete it only to have them return the next time I open Thunderbird.

That's good information. Basically, you cannot delete without unsubscribing first. If folder has gone from server then you are stuck because you cannot unsubscribe and deleting just makes the folder reappear because it is still included in your mail account.

Try this:

make hidden files and folders visible.

In Thunderbird

  • Help > troubleshooting Information
  • click on 'show folder ' button

a new window opens showing profile folder name contents. * Close Thunderbird now - this is important.

  • click on 'ImapMail' folder
  • click on mail account name

look for mbox file with no extension which has the same name as your folder. there will also be another file with same name plus .msf extension

  • Delete both of these files.

If the folders you created were actually subfolders: you will also see a folder a .sbd extension. Click on that folder to see more mbox files and corresponding .msf files. Delete the files you do not require.

Restart Thunderbird.

I've tried this as well. This solution has been posted in the forums previously. Still does not work. Is there anything else I can do?

It won't work if Thunderbird is still running.

I get that. And I've done it several times all with Thunderbird closed. I can't figure this out.

check this: In the profile folder / imapMail / mail account right click on one of those mbox files which you are trying to delete and select 'properties'. At the bottom it says 'Attributes' Is 'read only' selected ? If yes, uncheck that box and click on 'Apply' and then 'OK'

then click on the 'Security' tab select your user name in the lower section, does it say you have full control and the options to modify, read and execute. read etc are all selected?
