box appears on top of left of all screens after staring thunderbird

This 1 inch by 4 inch wide box covers thunderbird, excel, word, chrome, ie explorer, etc. It stays "on top" and can't be gotten rid of until I kill thunderbird.exe*32 in task manager. Tom
