V27, 27.1, won't play some YouTube videos. Even in safemode

I have trouble viewing videos on my default browser, latest Firefox v 27. I think I am not alone in this.

I do have the latest versions of Flash Player, Real Player, and Javascript is enabled (not java)

I first found it in videos from my favourite cats site (cheezeburger..) but I have just found it happens with videos from Serif Community Plus. Videos accessed via FP work, even when referred to YouTube (Clicked)

Videos direct from YouTube work, but not videos from YouTube accessed via cheezburger links.

These faults happen only in Firefox 27, and videos play OK in Maxthon 3, (Chrome and Opera - last time I checked.) I know you recommend against this but can you tell exactly how to reload the previous version of Firefox, V26 - I had no trouble with that.

I have tried running FF27 in safe mode, no effect. I do not want to lose the various add ins I use, so I do not want to reset to factory settings.

I think isnt necessary,

Click with right button mouse on the bookmarks area or in the title bar(Press F10 or alt to see the title bar), and click on Customize

Then drag the address bar and drop above the stripe tabs.

Go to about:config search for browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab change itsvalue to false

If I went, you got to install flash player and active x for Firefox to work. Search on a blog called SOFT PC. I hope you work.

But before you back previous version try solve the problem, here on SUMO there are many colaborators to help you!

Try clear your recent history:

Try also a Clean Reisntall

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING: Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!

Please report back to see if this helped you!

Thank you.

Do these video use the Adobe Flash Player or possibly an HTML5 media player?

You can try to set the media.directshow.enabled pref to false on the about:config page to disable the built-in HTML5 media player.

You can open the about:config page via the location bar.

This is a reply to all three of: LorenzoZippilli, DiegoVictor and Cor-ed

Thanks for trying to help me.

I first will reply to LorenzoZippilli: I have the latest Flash Player and it has tested OK as being installed. There are a lot of settings to control Active X in W XP. I have tried several, but my localcomputer expert tells me I should disable it generally.

I can not find help on the Soft PC blog.

Reply to Diego Victor: I have cleared recent history and caches I have run FF in Safe mode- no themes, no extensions, and tried hardware acceleration on and off.

I have done clean re-install – even installed FF v 25, and then 26. The videos still did not work, so I have reinstalled 27.0.1

Reply to Cor-el: I don’t know what players YouTube use. I have tried what you suggested, and it did not work.

The current fault situation is this:

It started At some time in last few days, and it seemed to be at the same time FF upgraded to v 27. YouTube videos linked from one part of the cheezburger/lolcats site will not play. YouTube from other parts of the same site, same pages, will play. For you interest the videos linked from the central scrolling picture are do not [lay, with a general error message. The videos with links in other parts of the cheezburger page to play.

Going direct to Youtube, videos will play.

I have the latest realplayer, flash and Java installed and working.

So the problem appears to be an incompatibility between FF and cheezburger site. But cheezburger videos play OK on all other browsers – Maxthon, Chrome, Opera, Avant, etc.

FF has been tried in several versions, and in Safe mode, and with the adjustments to many other video related features.

I have registered the replies from all three responders as helpful, basically because their suggestions seem to have eliminated many possible reasons.

ignore this

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Thanks, but I have already done all that.

Finally, OK The cheezburger sites YouTube videos all run OK

I did a COMPLETE uninstall, and reinstalled FF. I had exported all the bookmarks to another browser, and re-imported them, so I still have them.

I lost all my customisations, but I have been able to restore all my add-ins.

BTW You can get Amazon uk search engine by going to Mycroft Project.

Two features I want to restore are having the tabs below the address bar (navigation bar?) and while having a close button on every tab, not closing FF when I close the last remaining tab.

Shall I re-post this as another question?

I think I lost my text. Start again. Thanks for the very fast response

(1) "browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab change its value to false." Worked OK.

(2) I just could not find a way to drag the address bar above the tabs. I could move its components to be in front of the tabs, which moved along, but not down into the row below. But, I used the about:config dialogue to set browsertabsontop >false. This worked OK, too.
