Firefox suddenly stopped loading Pinterest, claiming there was a 'content encoding error'. Earlier today, I swear it reverted itself to an older version 3.6.10

I have an old version of Linux, but this hadn't been too much of a problem since I spent hours getting the latest version of Firefox that my system can run.

This morning, Firefox acted like it was automatically installing a newer version; BUT, when I opened it up, all the new features I had come to love & depend on were gone, and it suddenly had a lot of trouble with sites it never had before. I managed to tolerate this, because it wasn't worth spending literally all day or longer trying to find a newer version that *might* be supported by my OS.

After successfully using Pinterest not seconds before, I suddenly got a new error message ['Content encoding error: The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.'] and am completely blocked out of the site, unless you can do something about this!

Apparently clearing the cache solved the Pinterest problem immediately.

However, I'm still not content with this old version of Firefox, and it unsettles me that it reverted to this on its own. Many websites keep telling me this browser is too old, and it's much clunkier than the version I had become accustomed to. I'd very much like to know what's going on and get some leads on what to do to fix this.
