Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Thanks for the suggestions. Tried safe mode/ themes/ disabling text search and spell check. no change. uninstalled firefox completely and re-installed. from the initial home screen (google), the search does not work. when I type in something to search for, it appears as though it is going to a search result page. the screen goes to white and the address bar shows http://www.google.com/search?q=weather&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&source=hp&channel=np......... but never does anything else. I feel like I am missing something really simple.

Try Reset Firefox preferences to troubleshoot and fix problems or the other suggestions in the How to fix preferences that won't save article. That will reset your Firefox preferences, including the home page, to the Firefox default settings.

solved. webroot secure anywhere is our virus & malware program. it has a setting to analyze search engine results. when this option was disabled everything works fine. thanks for suggestions.
