Help! I have been stuck on 60.9.1. I tried to upgrade many years ago and lost all my past emails and folders. A search at the time said there was no way to get them back so I reinstalled 60 and have lived there ever since. A couple of weeks ago Google mail changed their security protocols and dropped POP and 60.9 apparently can not read IMAP. I love Thunderbird and would prefer to stay but I don't want to loose all my past emails and folders. So, I would like to upgrade to the latest stable version. Is there a path that won't dump my history? I have read many posts on here but still can't find the path to being current. Can I simply install the latest version or do I have to install in stages. If in stages what is the order of version to install and should I stop at each version to check/test something before moving to the next install?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Some info: POP is still supported by Gmail. I'm not sure how that rumor got started. - for safety, backup your profile. Shouldn't be touched, but safety is safety. If you don't know where it is, click help>moretroubleshootinginformation, scroll down to 'profiles' and click 'about:profiles' to see exact name and location. - download latest version and install. - you may have to manually update addressbook. in Addressbook menu, you can specify import of MAB file and that will do it. - Gmail requires Oauth authentication: Here are the basics:

- change your security authorization to Oauth2 (do this for the incoming server settings and also for the Outgoing (SMTP) server - two places - remove the password entries for the account (remove the entire entries both incoming and outgoing) - that password info is at Tools>Preferences>Privacy&Security - click 'saved passwords' Then click 'show passwords' then highlight the rows with incoming and outgoing gmail servers and click DELete. - check to ensure that TB is set to accept cookies (that setting is just above the Passwords section) - Google will then step you through the authentication process for your PC.

Thanks David, I'll give it a try tonight. Your reply reminded me that it was the Oauth2 that got me with 60.9. If I recall I could set outgoing server to Oaut2 but not incoming, it wasn't available on the pull down. But in any case, I look forward to upgrading.

I downloaded and installed 91.10 and now have access to my Gmail accounts again. But my old folders are gone. It just looks like a clean new install not an update. How do I get my folders email history back?

It sounds like TB prompted you to create email accounts because it didn't 'see' your profile. Your old profile is still there, probably at c:\users\yourID\appdata\roaming\thunderbird\profiles. If it was just local folders, you can copy (when TB is NOT running) from one profile to the other. And the addressbook is on old profile as abook.mab and history.mab. You can copy those also to new profile, where you can then import them from the addressbook menu bar.

Copying the folders worked! Thank you, Thank you!

Last piece of the puzzle is to get the remaining email from Google. TB is getting all new email since I installed the new version but the rest of the (old) email still sitting in the inbox on Google. How do I tell TB to get all the email from the Google inbox (some are read most are not)? Of course, I only need to do this once.

You're using POP? Okay, this is messy, but easy. What you need to do is combine the contents of one inbox with the contents of another. Here are guidelines and you can tweak as needed: - install the import/export addon - in TB, click help>moretroubleshootinginformation, scroll down to profiles, click 'about:profiles' and select your OLD profile. - now, export the contents of inbox to eml files. - next, repeat the step above to switch profiles and this time, select the new one (the one you plan to use regularly) - now, import the eml files into the inbox. and you're done. These steps provide the basic dance steps, but you can adjust the music as needed.

I installed the import/export addon, restarted TB and went to the profile section as you instructed but can't see how to export. I attached an image of what I see. It doesn't look any different than before the addon install.

The p1vswys8 profile is the old profile that I have set as "in use".

And I only copied the mail folder from the old account to the new account. I did it last night before your reply. I was afraid to copy everything for fear of reinstalling the old server send and receive protocols. Should I copy everything?

You went to about:profiles, but did not select the old profile, the one with some messages to combine with new profile. After doing that, you should be viewing the profile you started with.

How do I "select"? I can't click on anything for the old profile except the "Open Folder" and "Rename" buttons.

The screenshot you posted showed a button to 'select as default profile'

The top profile is my old profile and is already selected as the default.

Okay, in that case, you can export the messages from within that profile, working from an earlier post of mine. Then switch to the other profile to import them.

I tried setting the default to the old and the new profile and both now show the same emails and folders. Neither show the old inbox emails. Recall that I only moved the Email folder from the old profile to the new. is there another file or folder that holds the inbox emails that I also need to move?

I had somehow overlooked that. If you copied from one to the other, you may have overlaid the messages.

Has Thunderbird updated you to 91.12.0 ?
