How do I edit the list of words in the Thunderbird spell-checker?

There are two ways of editing the Personal Dictionary. Either via Thunderbird or by accessing the 'persdict.dat 'file in the 'profile name' folder.
You can only add and edit words you have added, to the 'Personal Dictionary'. If you have added words to the 'Personal Dictionary' or want to add some words: Via Thunderbird: Click on 'Write' to open new message compose window click on 'Spelling' to open the 'Check Spelling' window in 'Personal Dictionary' area - click on 'Edit' A new window opens called 'Personal Dictionary' You can select a word and click on 'Remove'. You can type a word in the 'New word' field and then click on 'Add' to add to list. Click on 'Close'
Where is this stored within the Thunderbird Profile so I can do it manually and directly to file?
Menu app icon > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
Under 'Application Basics' half way down is 'Profile Folder' - click on 'Open Folder'
This opens a new window showing the contents of the 'profile name' folder.
You will see a file called 'persdict.dat'
That file can be opened using a simple text editor like Notepad.
The words will be listed one below the other on far left.
If you manually wanted to edit that file, you must Exit/close Thunderbird Now. You must add single words one below another: isn't can't don't
Then save the file. Those words will be available in the 'Personal Dictionary'.

I'll add a comment, as it took me several attempts to navigate.

Write is "sometimes visible button" (view -> mail toolbar) ...so you may not have it. So in the original Thunderbird window File->new (or however you compose a new message) then in new window that pops up (e.g. "write window") IFF you have the composition bar visible (view->toolbars->composition bar) hit the spelling button in that bar, otherwise use options->check spelling (or just ctrl->shift->P)
