Firefox does not respond to a search request

Firefox does not respond to a search request. After closing, a restart is answered by an error message - "Firefox is already running. The old Firefox process must be closed to open a new window." When this is done, another instance of Firefox displays. It appears that two instances of Firefox have opened when only one was requested and the second has somehow disabled the search request, either manual (direct) or from a separate application/link. I have completed a Refresh without any change in behaviour. What can I do now? Thank you Graham Garden

When you close any program, you need to give it time to finish closing. That's when programs do their housecleaning.

Try a slow count of 15.

Thanks FredMcD but that has not solved the problem

Thanks FredMcD A-Virus (TrendMicro) custom full scan reports nothing Registry has no blank stubs Profile attribute - Read Only now NOT selected parent.lock file (roaming) 0 bytes But for single instance of Firefox with only one tab open, Task manager is showing seven Firefox processes open - see attached jpg file. Is this to be expected? Condition seems to be intermittent. I will continue to monitor while I leave this thread open. Thank you Graham Garden

More than one process is normal for the current Firefox. http://www.ghacks.net/2016/07/22/multi-process-firefox/

Multi-process Firefox is codenamed "e10s". https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/multiprocess

Matches! Something I had forgotten. Some time ago, I uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled with a downloaded version of Firefox Installer V 18.5.0.0. Memory's not crash hot these days but I think the trouble began then. G
