Firefox Downloads Not Starting

I started to download some files from a public web site and noticed, after downloading a few files, that the next few downloads all refused to actually start, showing unknown time left. To clarify, a few downloads would work fine, but then I would attempt the next download and it would cause the download to hang. Worse, I cannot download any files - at all - beyond that until I close my browser and reopen it.

This has happened ive times in ten minutes. Every time, restarting the browser causes the files I attempted to download previously to immediately successfully download without any intervention from myself upon relaunch. I can then download another few files, and then it starts to hang again. I have been forced to move this downloading activity over to Google Chrome while reporting the issue, and so far Chrome does not seem to have any issues.

Any ideas?

Ugh, I wish I could edit. I was saying it happened five times in ten minutes, and want to add on that deleting the hung entries from the download history is impossible, meaning even if I changed my mind on one of the hung downloads, it will still download upon relaunch as I cannot remove it from the list.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

I am not sure how those would solve the problem. I have never done anything to refresh Firefox, I have never changed the theme (it should be default), and so on. Is it possible an installed extension is causing the issue? Does having multiple windows open possibly cause the issue? Also, how come I have no problems on Chrome? As noted, I have not has one download hang on Chrome yet since posting this question, over hours. I had the issue on Firefox four times within ten minutes. Ironically I had to move Twitch use to Firefox for a while, but it's working properly again on Chrome so it's back over there.

Safe Mode is a way of testing if the browser, or something about the computer is causing the issue. If the problem goes away, that tells up one thing. If not something else.

Is it possible an installed extension is causing the issue?

Starting the browser in Safe Mode can point to that.

Does having multiple windows open possibly cause the issue?

That should be an issue.

Also, how come I have no problems on Chrome?

It's a different program programmed differently.

Is this with all websites/pages, some, a few? Are you using a download manager?

The site in question is khinsider.com. They have a collection of game music available to download, and I get a hung download with "Unknown time remaining" for a download that does not automatically start there. If you want me to test another site, I can try that. That would help determine if the problem is with that site. Either way, that site works fine in Chrome.

Would my browser sessions carry over to Safe Mode? Or would I eventually lose my browser session and have to restart that? I tend to keep my browser session intact between uses, even using the task manager to close the browser if multiple windows are open.
