Hi,

I got an email saying my gmail address was used to sign into firefox, from somewhere in Tanzania?

Is this a phising scam? Email says it's from accounts.firefox.com.

Thanks, Geoffrey

Go to https://accounts.firefox.com/settings Across from Devices & apps, press Show.

Is anything listed that you don't want? If yes, remove it. Then change the password.

Note: Resetting the sync password, or changing its e-mail, will remove all data from the servers.

This is a security feature. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/ive-lost-my-firefox-sync-account-information

  • I've lost my Firefox Sync account information - What to do
  • I’ve forgotten, or don't have access to, my Firefox Account email address

The data in your profiles will not be affected.

If there is an unauthorized entry, Change All Passwords Everywhere and verify the e-mails on file with those sites.

Thanks for the replies.

I've never logged into firefox in my life, though I've used it for many years.

I do log into chrome, but there's no way they can compromise my chrome login from firefox right?

Do I need to worry?

You are not logging into Firefox, you are logging into the sync server.

If there are unknowns listed with the sync server, do as I posted above.

Where are you located?

Hello GeoffreyPalmer,

Do you even have a Firefox Sync account  ?

I'm asking because you say that you have never logged into
Firefox in your life .....

Did this email come from Google (Gmail)?

Did you ever used a VPN ?

Note that other services like Firefox Monitor and Firefox Send also use a Firefox Account.

I was just going to add that, but you beat me to it - good for you !

@FredMcD - I don't currently use any mozilla applications, nor do I currently have or use Firefox. I don't and have never had a firefox/mozilla account of any kind.

@McCoy - no

@cor-el - email comes from accounts.firefox.com

That's why the email I got is so strange.

I'm thinking either: a) the email I got is some kind of phising scam b) somebody has set up a mozilla account using my email and might be trying to steal my identity c) somebody in Tanzania set up a mozilla account and accidently used my email by mistake?

Would it be possible for you to provide a screenshot of that email  ?

If you need help to create a screenshot, please see : How do I create a screenshot of my problem?

Once you've done this, attach the saved screenshot file to your forum post by clicking the Browse... button below the Post your reply box.

I've uploaded a screen shot.

Reading a little closer - it's saying my email was a secondary email? which is still very odd.

I have no idea who the person is. It's not a name I recognize or have in my contacts or anything.

Best, G

You will of course not have verified that email and (as
suggested earlier by FredMcD) changed your password
for that email account ...... (?)

I have not verified the email, but I also haven't changed that password. I should do that though.

Yes, you really should (better safe than sorry). And after you changed your password : delete that email, forget all about it and relax ......
