Set Download dialog default selection

I just did a reinstall of Windows and Linux and installed Firefox 67.0.1 fresh. I've noticed that the default behavior of the download dialog is to have the "Open with..." radio button always selected by default. Previously, I know I had this defaulted to the "Save File" option (which honestly seems the safer default action). Also, the checkbox for "Do this automatically..." is always greyed out no matter which selection is active.

Seeing this behavior on both Windows 10 and Arch Linux. The only difference from previously installed environments is that the OSes are now on an NVMe solid state drive vs the SATA solid state drive before.

Did you check your extensions (e.g. Open with) ?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Yes, I checked this before any extensions were installed, and there is no hardware acceleration on Linux as far as I'm aware.

EDIT: But yes, the problem is still present in Firefox's Safe Mode.

EDIT 2: As an addendum of strange behavior, after using Safe Mode, my previous profile became unusable. Whenever I try to start with it, I get a dialog "You've launched an older version of Firefox" with options for Create New Profile and Quit. Safe Mode appears to be tripping a profile flag it shouldn't.

You can changing download actions

You can change what action Firefox takes for defined content types. This will not affect media embedded in a web page - only links to the files themselves.

Click the menu button Fx57Menu and choose Options.
In the General panel, go to the Applications section.
Select the entry for the file type you want to change. #

No. As I mentioned, the "Do this automatically.." checkbox is greyed out no matter what. I'm not trying to mess around with download actions, I'm just trying to get the radio button to default to Save. I do still want the dialog, though.

If "Do this automatically.." is grayed then this means that the server sends the file with a generic content type like "application/octet-stream". "Do this automatically.." is only possible when the file is send with a valid content type for this file extension.

Yes, but the question still remains of why is it defaulting to selecting the 'Open with' radio button in the dialog instead of 'Save' like it did before the fresh install? Or, how can I make it select the 'Save' radio button by default instead? My understanding of download actions is that they don't even pop the dialog when they are present -- that's not what I'm after.
