How do I stop Firefox itself from screwing with my settings?

Firefox keeps changing my Home Page and New Tab settings to something other than what it was already set to. Once was OK, but having set it back to what I want it to be, Firefox should respect that setting and not override it to a Firefox page. This is an issue that could convince me to quit using Firefox, even though I have a strong dislike for the other main choices.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
