How do I re-enable the add-ons WITHOUT being forced to upgrade.
I am running an old version of firefox intentionally, I will not update it so don't even suggest it. How can I get these addons re-enabled so I can continue to use them.
If the only answer id update FF then So long and thanks for all the fish.

You can run this code in the Browser Console to install the intermediate certificate.
- "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Web Developer
- https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Tools/Browser_Console
You can verify success in the Certificate Manager (Authorities tab) under Mozilla Corporation: signingca1.addons.mozilla.org You will also have to reset this pref on the about:config page to trigger a signature check.

Older versions may not have the setting in options that has fixed this for me. But if you can find it there, give it a try:
Mozilla has rolled-out a fix for this. The fix will be automatically applied in the background within the next few hours, you don’t need to take active steps.
In order to be able to provide this fix on short notice, they are using the Studies system. You can check if you have studies enabled
- Go to [=] > Options > Privacy & Security.
- Make sure Allow Firefox to install and run studies is check marked.
I you had it disabled, you can disable studies again after your add-ons have been re-enabled.
They are working on a general fix that doesn't need to rely on this and will keep you updated.
It looks as though Mozilla allowed a certificate, encryption keys, to expire. This automatically disabled all add-ons because they require authentication. You should see the link on every support.Mozilla.org page at the top: We rolled out a hotfix that re-enables affected add-ons. The fix will be automatically applied in the background within the next few hours. For more details, please check out the update at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-ons-failing-install-firefox You have a choice of 3 different methods to fix this problem: 1. In order to have Mozilla apply the hotfix, under about:preferences#privacy, you must "Allow Firefox to install and run studies." This is a passive type of update. When you enable permission, you must wait for Firefox to install and run studies.
===========
2. See Below How to Add the Intermediate Certificate Using the Certificate Manager, Authorities Tab, Import Command. You Must Have the Intermediate Certificate in a *.PEM Text File. You May be Required to Re-apply All of Your Add-ons.
===========
3. This Method Does Not Work for the Standard Windows Release: You can either use what Mozilla calls "Studies" to install a hotfix, manually add the Intermediate Certificate, or you can do something more drastic outlined here: https://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=65910#p188241
WARNING: The adblockplus.org "fix" in the above thread disables ALL authentication encryption key requirements. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. If you use the above fix, I suggest you use it temporarily until Mozilla comes out with an upgrade above version 66.0.3. Mozilla is saying to use the Studies method because the above adblockplus method interferes with their hotfix: https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2019/05/04/update-regarding-add-ons-in-firefox/
I realize you are using an older version of Firefox so it's your choice what to do.

cor-el, is there any way to install the intermediate certificate without using the Browser Console? Can I use the Certificate Manager, Authorities tab, Import command? Where can I download the intermediate certificate so I can just import it and what is the file extension?
Thanks.

You can copy the base64 encoded certificate to a .pem file and import the certificate in the Certificate Manager under the Authorities tab. Do not set any trust bit when prompted because this is an intermediate certificate.

cor-el, thanks, it worked. I did have to re-apply the install for Adblock Plus but I did not have to redo any settings. All settings are the same.
Thanks again.
You're welcome Cypherdude.

Cor-el, how do I do this with v54? The above instructions don't work.
Funny. "studies" option is NOT available on 52ESR, which Mozilla stuck us with for XP. I'll try the code insert if updates do not come (how they "updated" me with the updates killed, I have no idea...nor how they will fix it with updates killed)
You can copy the base64 certificate code to a .cer or .pem file and import this file in the Certificate Manager under the Authorities tab. Do not set any trust bits.

Okay, figured out the console, but how in the heck do you save a pem format to a .cert file, and where? Saved it in a word document, cannot find it with the wizard, so all stop.

You need to save in a plain text format. In Word, you should be able to Save As to a .txt file. Alternately, you could paste the encoded certificate into the Windows Notepad program and save from there.
Or, if you trust me, you can download from my site here:
https://www.jeffersonscher.com/sumo/signingca1addonsmozillaorg_20190504.crt
Go to about:config
Search for xpinstall.signatures.require
Double click it to set to false.
Wait a few seconds. Your add-on's should come back to life.
My issue was somewhat resolved using
xpinstall.signatures.require = true and setting it to false.
However, now that the disabled add-on's are re-enabled, each of them is highlighted in yellow with an unsupported notification.

Regular releases do not honor
xpinstall.signatures.require => false
That is for ESR releases and Developer/Nightly releases.
Also, this introduces the risk of rogue updates, so you should consider also disabling extension auto-updates with this setting so you'll have the opportunity to inspect and reject any questionable extension updates:
extensions.update.autoUpdateDefault => false
With that setting, when an update is detected, a new category will appear on the Add-ons page listing available updates.
Again, I WAS set to "false" YEARS before this issue, and it still is. No change. Tried saving in Word as .txt, wizard cannot find it, so I'll use the link provided. I mean, how bad can it be compared to this current fiasco? My wife's XP-64 is fine. Mine is screwed down tight, no updates, no nothing, and MAYBE the "fix" cannot get in. Still puzzled as to how this all worked to change my settings. Off to try the link!
Updates have been disabled since last year. Thanks though. But I know you're making sure the OP has all necessary information.
Also, this isn't a fix. It's a temporary workaround. But it will allow addon use on ESR releases such as my own.
By the way, my post was intended for the OP jpotterny who is running FF 50.

No idea if it worked or not. Selected the last block (software?) hit go, window went away, add-ons still borked.

ESR channels only had 60.0 ESR, 52.0 ESR, 45.0 ESR, 38.0 ESR etc.
Fx 50.0 was on Release channel only so that Preference will not work.
