I want to make the font larger on my received email messages. I would also like a CONSISTENT larger font for outgoing messages I compose. Having done what your support site recommends to make the changes and failed, I want to succeed. The sooner the better. My eyes are old and I have macular degeneration. Thank you.

The size of text in the list and in other controls, such as the menus, is a separate challenge.
The easiest way to tweak that is to install an add-on:

A rather more geeky way to do this is to create two files, userContent.css and userChrome.css, both containing this text:
* { font-size: 10pt !important; }
and place these two files in a folder named chrome in your profile. The userContent.css file deals with message text size, and userChrome.css manages the menus and lists.
You adjust the 10pt by trial and error.

Well you'll need to tell us what you have done so we can tell you want else you need to do.
Did you adjust font sizes under Tools|Options|Display|Formatting>Advanced? For both "Latin" and "Other Writing Systems"?
I adjusted exactly as recommended and restarted. The LIST of emails received stayed the same AS A LIST, an email only enlarging as I opened it. I want the entire list font size to enlarge so I can know immediately what has arrived and can choose those to which I want to respond. Please keep trying. Thank you.

Just a side note.... "Theme-font-size-changer" does not support Linux.
Yes, that's why I indicated the alternative possibility using the css files.
