Why is thunderbird 38 frequently not responding
I have had TB 38.0.1 frequently "not responding" error message popping up. I've read through many threads and sites and tried several fixes, but the problem still persists. Also, I've had the same issue with Firefox 39.0. Does anyone have a tried & true solution?

Start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
Does problem go away?
If it does not go away, Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode - win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode - XP http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx
