TB 31.2.0 freezes for seconds at a time except in SAFE mode

On my XP64sp2, I just now updated to TB 31.2.0 from 3.something. My only reason for updating was so I could use "Remove Duplicate Messages (Alternate) 0.3.10". I installed the add-in immediately, so perhaps there was no problem before installing it. But after installing it, along with a couple of other add-ins, TB runs extremely slow, and with the cursor frozen 99% of the time. Once I am able to move the cursor out of the TB window the cursor works just fine, until I move it back into TB.

I tried TB "safe mode" and it runs fine. Since then, I have disabled all Extensions and Plugins. But problem continues except in safe mode.

Help would be appreciated. (Also I would not mind downdating to a TB version older than 31 if that would help and I could find an older one.)

What about themes, and have your restarted your computer?

Matt -- Thank you for your quick response. However: I don't know anything about themes. However, Tools>Add-ons>Appearance shows only Default 31.2.0 (disabled). And all Extensions are 'disabled', and all Plugins are "Never Activate".

Just restarted my computer twice and Problem persists.

I am working 12 hour shifts ATM so time here is limited.

Could you post a screen shot of that disabled theme? Might be just me, but it does not sound quite right on the face of it.

As an exercise (perhaps in futility) try running thnderbird both in normal and safe mode win windows safe mode with networking, just to see if the results are truly the same as your seeing now. Windows XP to safe mode,

Matt -- I DO appreciate your spending the time you can on this! Theme images are below: 1st TB safe, 2nd TB normal.

I tried XP safe mode. Both TB safe and normal work fine there. Returned to normal XP, and problem still persists.

Also tried "Disable all add-ons", 3rd image, returning to TB normal from TB safe. That helped only a bit -- time between hangups are increased from milliseconds to a two or three seconds. Then hangs for seconds again, and again.

Thanks for your efforts in my behalf. -- Keith

Ok try and enable the default theme.

What I think is key here perhaps is that in XP safe mode your anti virus real time scanning is disabled. In normal mode it is not.

The fact both Thunderbird modes work fine in XP safe mode indicated that your anti virus or other startup application is the root cause of the issue.

My first option is anti virus as they cause so many problems. What are you using?

Unrelated but based on something I was reading this morning, I suggest you run [http:// http://www.adlice.com/softwares/roguekiller/ RogueKiller in addition to normal anti virus a few times ion the coming days.

As your using XP and probably have older software to go with the older operating system. The messy details of this new file free threat can be found here

Matt -- So sorry to take so long to respond. Work and weekend commitments slowed me to a crawl.

I use Avast! paid version for anti-virus. I tried rebooting, then disabling Avast, then running normal TB 31.2.0. Did not help at all.

I also downloaded, installed, and ran RogueKiller 10.0.6.0. I am now trying to decipher RogueKillers results. Its messages are in a selection of different colors. All were either Gold, Gray, or Green backgrounds. And I will try to find out what they mean. I also plan to run MalwareBytes.

In the mean time, I'm using TB in safe mode.

I will let you know when I learn more (success or failure).

Again, thank you for all your help. -- Keith
