How do I lock my default language to English for all web pages?

I have discovered that my language keeps reverting back to French for my web pages. Not for the sites per se, but for anything that I manually enter into a field or form. And since I have my work and home computers set to sync, it keeps reverting back on both systems. It's not necessarily noticeable until I type a word that isn't in the French dictionary, and then everything gets the red underline to indicate the misspelling. I change it *every single day,* but it doesn't stick. Any suggestions?

For the record... the language does not go to French on my Yahoo Mail, but it does on Facebook and random web pages. I initially thought it was a Facebook problem, but when I tried Chrome, MSIE, and Opera (yes, Opera), there was no French issue, I narrowed it down to Firefox. Sorry.

You can check the order of the installed Languages.

   Firefox > Preferences > Content > Languages

1) go to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Language_packs here you find an actual link to the language packs in any language, for firefox 4. They are in fact files called "xpi" (add-ons for firefox), to be found at http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest/win32/xpi/ (but this could change at a later point in time...).

2) click on the laguage pack you like (in the file list as above described), it will be installed immediately by firefox.

3) type about:config in your browser address bar, and go to "general.useragent.locale" (you can type this in the "filter" bar that you see there). Edit the value to the language shortcode you just downloaded, if this isn't done yet (eg: "en-GB" for british english, instead of "de-DE" for german!)

The only two languages listed are: English/United States [en-us] English [en]

This problem only started happening about 2 weeks ago. I have been a Firefox user for quite a number of years on quite a number of different computers, and this has never happened. As an American, I don't use other languages. Remember: most of us don't speak anything except English. (I do actually know French, but its use is extremely limited.)

Please refer to images for proof that I'm not crazy.

@amitshree My preferred language is ENGLISH. Why would I need to add my English/United States [en-us] language **again** when it's already there? Are you telling me that you think I need to re-install it?

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Try disabling the Dictionnaires français 4.9 extension that you have installed??

How do I disable or uninstall something that I have never intentionally enabled or installed? If you actually look at the screen shots I have posted, you will see that there are only two English language modules installed/enabled. One of which is US English, and that is my preferred language. Doesn't anyone read through these posts & replies before throwing in what they think is their own brilliant solution?

You appear to have installed an additional French dictionary that shows as four French dictionaries in the right-click context menu under languages. This has nothing to do with installed languages in "Tools > Options > Content > Languages" that are language choices send to the server via the HTTP request headers.

If you do not want to use those dictionaries then you can uninstall (or disable) the extension that added them.

See:

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise then see:

Finally! There was a French dictionary listed in the extensions, and disabling it did the trick.

Now....here's the next problem: how in the world did it get there???? I ***never*** authorized the installation of that dictionary. And since this whole issue just started happening about 2-3 weeks ago, then it should be easy enough to figure out when it happened. But I'm not seeing any dates of installation or activation on any of my other extensions. (for the record, none of my add-ons are enabled at all.)

Maybe there is a glitch somewhere...? Maybe this snuck in on another extension...? How can I tell when these other extensions were installed? If it were a virus or some sort, then it managed to get through a significant number of layers of protection.
