I am now locked out of Firefox. I do not know my user ID or password and it is apparently required to get into firefox after changing an option in preferences. I am in a vicious circle and cannot get out.

Normally Firefox doesn't require a password for cookies. However, you can set up a Master Password to protect your saved logins. Does that sound like what might have happened?

You should be able to remove a Master Password using the steps in this article: Use a Primary Password to protect stored logins and passwords (see the "Removing the master password" section).

If you don't know the Master Password, you can reset it, but that also removes all the saved logins, so you'll need to log into sites by hand. See: Reset your Primary Password if you've forgotten it.

If you are not getting asked for your Master Password, does Firefox give more detail about what it's looking for?

In case this problem is caused by a bad add-on, you can bypass the add-ons by starting Firefox in its "Safe Mode" and then remove the source of the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Assuming you're in, does the problem stop?

If so, you can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable or remove.

Any improvement?

I have resolved this problem. Thank you.

However, I still get this message:

The page isn’t redirecting properly Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies.

So how do I resolved this? I did the cookie thing as suggested!

Note that it is usually sufficient to create a cookie allow exception for specific domains rather than enabling all third-party cookies.
