I have FF v21, which has the download box that is loved and easy to use. Especially when i want to pause and resume downloads. I want to update to the latest FF, but i don't like the newer download box. I was wondering what version has the box before it switches over and if the older download box has been bought back?

So many people miss that box and it was one of the best features from FF. If it hasn't been bought back, what is taking so long?

I really want to update to latest FF, but am not looking forward to the download box changing, if it still isn't back.

Could anyone tell me if the latest FF has the older loved download box or the newer one?

Thanks for any help

Hello it was great to see your love towards Firefox browse and as you mentioned above that you are unable to find the download box. So I would like to tell you that the newer Firefox browser has came up with many new updates and we are making it more and more easier for the user. And this is to inform you that the downloading features is also done better then before but we would see to your request and thanks for believing on Firefox..

The download manager has been tweaked quite a bit in recent versions, allowing you to see progress, pause and restart downloads again. It's still an updated design, but it brings back all the functionality of the old manager.

Plus, using old versions of Firefox is leaving you at risk for dozens of security holes that have been patched since 21 was released. Please update ASAP.

Thanks for the replies.

I will try the latest FF on another computer to see what is new and to see what is new with the download manager.

I like the download manager of v 21 because it is really simple and easy, the newer ones were just too much going on and it took the pausing and restarting away.

I will reply back once i tried out the latest one and give my thoughts on it.

I know it isn't good to use past versions, but if something works fine it should just stick with that and stop trying to make it better and just work on making other features better.

Thanks again for the replies

well i updated FF on one computer, which has v35 i went to the site and downloaded what it said to be the latest one.

How do i find about FF, I don't see that option anymore, with the file menu gone.

Also, I do not like the download manager. it is way too confusing and too much going on. I don't want the library to come up so i can manage bookmarks and all that, i just want the simple download manager. That is why the earlier versions of the download manager were lot better.

Far as i know, v23 was last one that had the old manager. Yes the new one might be useful, but simple and easy is better.

I use Chrome, it is fast, but it uses too much processor and memory, FF is way better, but the download manager needs to be changed to be more simple and easy......just look back at earlier versions , thats the way the manager should be.

I just want to be able to download, pause, restart.....thats all nothing more nothing less.

Firefox 20.0 to 25.0 had the current download manager however it was possible to toggle the browser.download.useToolkitUI Preference to true to enable the old download manager. If you see the old download manager in Fx 21.0 then you have this Preference enabled.

This Preference no longer works as the old download manager was removed as of Firefox 26.0. This preference was only temporary as it was not intended to be used long term or permanent as some users who discovered this preference ever since Firefox 20.0 may have thought.

You can still download, stop, cancel and restart in the Downloads part of the Library.

The Downloads folder in the Library that is used by the new Downloads Manager is present since Firefox 8 (2011), so even in Firefox 23 both are present and managed.

The currently used Download Manager uses the Library and the places.sqlite database file to store the downloads list and treats downloads the same as other history items and adds an annotation (places table: moz_annos) to identify these items as downloads. The previously used Downloads Manager stored the downloads in the downloads.sqlite file.

Firefox manages downloads in the Downloads folder in the Library (History > Show All History)

  • Downloads are treated as history items: clearing history removes included download items and vice versa.
  • When downloads are in progress you see an animated download button on the Navigation Toolbar showing an estimate of the remaining time
  • The Download button gets a blue highlight once all download are finished to make you aware that new downloads are available.
  • Pause and Resume can be found in the right-click context menu of an item in the drop-down list and in the Library.

You can open the about:downloads page in a tab or window for easy access. In Private Browsing mode the about:downloads page will be used and not the Library Downloads Manager.
