I have the above box checked in the Advanced Options. But when I click on check for updates it automatically applies them; it doesn't give me the choice. I am on Firefox 27.0, Windows 7 Pro 64, all fully updated and patched. Note that there are no problems with the actual installation; it's just that the "choose" option isn't working. Any ideas?

Hello,

There is other way to do this:

Try go to Tools>>Addons>>In the top right of the window there is a button with a gear click on it and uncheck the option to update automatically.

Also:

The tools-addons gear only applies to updating add-ons - not updating Firefox itself. Also, the preference does not revert - it saves correctly and retains the setting (I tested it). The prefs file is not read-only, and has the line:

user_pref("app.update.auto", false);

So any other possibilities?

I think this problem is caused by a corrupet file.

Did you try create a new profile?

or try reset:

Hello jaman57, if you click the : "check for updates" button in Firefox button > Help > About firefox, then it is manual update, and the correct behavior.

see the No2 "The About Firefox window will open and Firefox will begin checking for updates and downloading them automatically." in the next kb article : Update Firefox to the latest version

i don't like that behavior also !

thank you

But if you do what it says in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/advanced-settings-browsing-network-updates-encryption#w_update-tab you should have the choice after checking whether to install. More info - both my two Win 7 machines have this behavior, so it's extremely unlikely it seems that it's a corrupt file - I can't see it being corrupted the same way on both machines. BUT - my two old XP machines work as checking the box should - i.e. they ask me if I want to install the update after I ask it to check. Very odd.
