Text input box on Google home page shows the cursor centered, and doesn't display text as I type.

When I go to the Google home page, the cursor is in the center of the text box. As I type, I can see only a portion of one character displaying, no matter how many letters I type. The issue persists in safe mode. I cleared the cache, and it stopped happening briefly, but then came back. I'm using Firefox 20 under Windows 7 64-bit.

Update: The problem goes away if I disable javascript with NoScript. It returns immediately when I re-activate javascript.

A couple people have reported this on Google's support forum, but I haven't seen any definitive answer to what causes it.

As a temporary workaround, Ctrl+Shift+r should reload the current page without using any cached files. Not sure whether that will work in this case, if the change is caused by a script that runs after page load.

The moment I type a character into the mostly-blank home page, Google switches to a results page and starts making suggestions and showing preliminary results. This is a feature of the instant predictions mode. Have you turned that off?

Safe Mode disables your extensions, but I notice you also have a lot of plugins, including duplicate Flash players. Could you try disabling all nonessential plugins and see whether that makes any difference?

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Plugins category

You may also want to delete duplicate Flash players, since the older ones have known security issues. It appears that if you update while Firefox is running the older files are not always cleaned out. On Windows 7x64 it can be found here:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash

You want only the latest NPSWF32 DLL file, which as of this moment is:

NPSWF32_11_6_602_180.dll

Delete any earlier NPSWF32files.

Might not help with Google, but...

Thanks for the reply.

At the moment, the Google page is not having the problem. It's happened sporadically and, as far as I can tell, randomly. If/when it happens again, I'll try disabling plug-ins.

I have instant results disabled, as turning it on leads to another issue (Firefox occasionally wants to download a file called "search.json.")

I did have three NPSWF32 dll files in that directory, so I deleted the two older ones.

Issues with getting a dialog to download "search.json" can be caused by ad-blocking extensions/software or other security software that modifies request or response headers from the server.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Exact same Problem, as described occures immediately after installation of Autopager Addon (... on a fresh set up system)

After turning Javascript on and off in about:config, I had the same problem with Firefox 23. Google Search box was no longer useable as described in the original message in this thread.

Deleting browser googleadservices cookies fixed Google input box in my case.
