Firefox keeps opening a new window every once in a while when I click on a tab to open it. It is happening quite a few times a day now and is annoying.

Firefox 3.5 versions and later have a feature called tear-off tabs.
You can detach a tab from the current window and open it in a new window by dragging a tab in the browser window.
You can drag that tab back to the tab bar in the original window to undo that detaching.

bug489729 (Disable detach and tear off tab):

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

cor-el, thank you for the information regarding "tear-off tabs". I must have been moving to fast and this was what was happening.
