the install and uninstall keep tellling me firefox is running but when I click on the icon to open ff nothing happens.

I was using ff7. IT told me to use ff3.6 I installed 3.6 without uninstalling 7. now ff will not work at all. When I try to uninstall it at the control panel, it says ff is running, but it is not. when I try to install ff, I get the same message. Apparently it is running somewhere on my computer but I dont know where.
