I have repeatedly "downloaded" the Firefox update, only to be reminded yet again to do so (on both home and work desktops). What's the problem?
Every time I open Firefox to go online, I get the message that my version of Firefox is no longer protected against online attacks. When I click the update button as instructed, a page appears that doesn't have any obvious further instructions. Under the assumption that all is well, I proceed to my online activity...only to have the same experience the next time I open Firefox.

Your update is stuck you will need to download. You are so far behind with 3.5.19 that the update, if it had worked would have to be run several times to bring you incrementally up to the latest, and actually the latest Firefox is 4.0.1

Start at http://www.mozilla.com and download the latest version. At the completion of the download don't let the setup start Firefox for you, when the setup ends, start Firefox in your normal manner this way you will be less likely to create a new profile. The extra startup pages are temporary -- read them. The next time Firefox comes up you should be back to starting with your normal home page.
Note: Firefox must be down once the install starts. Close Firefox with File>Exit. Then make sure Firefox is not running -- On Windows: check the "Processes" tab in the Windows Task Manager.
Once you are on Firefox 4.0 it will look different, and unless you already know what to expect you will be lost. Suggest reading the first ten steps in the following, so you understand the changes.
You can make Firefox 4.0.1 look like Firefox 3.6.17, see numbered items 1-10 in the following topic Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 look like 3.6)
