After installing the latest Firefox updates all bookmarks were deleted and even new ones ones are lost during shutdown

Since the last auto update, (version 3.6.10) all bookmarks disappeared. I followed the instructions in the troubleshooting, but didn't have any success, so decided to find the sites I had marked in the past and save them again to the bookmark list. The next time I restarted they were gone again. This happens every time I try to 'bookmark' a site, and apart from all the time it takes trying to troubleshoot, it is becoming very frustrating
