When I try to post a comment on LinkedIn, a dark veil appears on screen. I have never seen this before. As far as I know, I have not changed any settings. LinkedIn says it's a firefox problem.

Yes.

Can you restart into Troubleshoot Mode (from Help menu) to eliminate any addons interfering with the site content?

Does the same happen when you sign in using a new Private Window as well?

It's just possible LinkedIn no longer supports this legacy version for Windows 8.1 as they have moved on already some time ago.
