I updated Firefox to Version 154.0 and now I cannot search properly with/on Yahoo!

I've been using Firefox for so many years I don't use any other browser unless a site doesn't work, then I use 'Opera' (very infrequent). I updated Firefox to v154.0 and now searching does not work properly.

I used to be able to enter a question into the bar/box where one would normally view any given URL, select return, and Firefox would bring up Yahoo! search results.

With this update, that doesn't work. When I select return the URL that had been in the space just reappears. If I visit the Yahoo! main page and try to use the search box with the magnifying/eye-glass, it launches a blank tab.

I'm forced to use the AI icon to get a search result. I do NOT want to use that feature.

Also, with Firefox 154.0 I cannot remove other search engines. With every update I remove Google, Bing, Duck-Duck-Go, Wiki, Amazon, etc. because I ONLY want one search engine, Yahoo!

I checked the Yahoo!Search Extension and made sure all the "allow" buttons needed were selected.

I want to remove the other search engines from the Settings tab, and I would like to have the same behavior prior to the update: simply type my question or text into the main html bar/box and select return, and get results.

I see that other had an issue starting with version 142 or so that was similar, but I've not had this issue until two days ago.

Any help is appreciated. And yes I delete my cache etc. regularly. I'm on Mac OS 15.7.7 and again, it has never been a problem until updating Firefox to v154.

I've been having this problem, too. I'll try and search something from the address bar and...nothing happens. It doesn't even hang, it simply does not go anywhere, not even an error page. I'm using the "Yahoo Toolbar and New Tab" extension. I've closed out of sessions to clear everything and opened new sessions to no avail.

Edit: Nope, wasn't the Extension I don't think.

I did notice an option in the Firefox settings section under "Search" that their are two sets of options for "Search Engine Suggestions" and "Firefox Suggest", and I have a feeling that if anyone has selected anything in each area the engine and the Firefox Suggest (which I'm presuming is a new AI based helper) are walking on each other. I have none of the boxes selected. Of course, those options would only be helpful if the Yahoo search engine and Firefox gave 'results' of any type vs. the current behavior of either doing nothing, or launching an about: tab with no results within it. I don't know how Yahoo! is still in business honestly, but I won't use Google if it can be avoided. So for the moment, unless results come back, the best I can do is be stuck with the little AI icon in Yahoo!'s search bar. I don't want to educate their AI. I don't understand why it's broken. I think looking further into it there was a break at version 149 of Firefox that required a bug fix. So perhaps the bug has reappeared and the good folks at Mozilla will from a developer side re-add the last fix to correct the current bad behavior? (shrug).

Thanks for showing me this. I definitely went under "Firefox Suggest" checked "Suggestions from Firefox" and then unchecked the one that's already checked ("Retrieve suggestions from Mozilla as you type.". Kind of off topic from what we were talking about, a bit, but I've been having another issue with Yahoo of making suggestions while I type in their address bar from previous sessions, which it should absolutely not be doing, since I've had my settings set to erase everything once I close out of Firefox and end a session.

As for this specific problem we're talking about, it seems to come and go. So it's annoying, but not yet prohibitive. Like you said, perhaps they'll recognize it and fix it in the next update, which I imagine will be soon.

I have this problem. I use Yahoo search and when I search the page comes up with the results. But when I want to go to the next page I get this message.

Looks like there’s a problem with this site

The server at uk.search.yahoo.com sent back an error: 500 Internal Server Error What can you do about it?

Check to make sure you’ve typed the website address correctly.
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.

It happens on us.search too.

Now I can do the same on Opera browser and everything is fine. Where is the problem with Firefox?

Previous session data or addons?

If you try from a new Private Window? Or restarting into Troubleshoot Mode (from Help menu)?

I've tried opening a private window and attempted the same search behaviors I've always used and it did the same.

That said, I checked my husband's computer. He is using v159 as well. Google is his default, but if you go to Settings and then Search, Yahoo! is NOT listed as one of the search engines he could turn on or make his default. Bing, Duck-Duck, etc are all there, only Yahoo! is missing.

So, perhaps the Yahoo!Search plug is is now 'required' for Firefox use (isn't on the list of search engine options). AND, perhaps on top of that, the extension is broken.

I used his computer to open a Yahoo! page, did a search in their search bar and used the magnifying glass, and I got search results with a pop up saying "Try Yahoo Scout" (apparently their name of their AI as it also appears when you hover over the icon).

So another work around would be to remove the extension, and go to a yahoo page whenever I want to do a search since I want to use it as my default. That's a hassle because if I remove the extension then Yahoo! will not be on the search engine list in Firefox's Search Settings page.

I haven't tried restarting in trouble-shoot mode yet.

Oh, off topic, but in v159 the extensions or add-ons for Firefox that deselect the box for "always stay logged in" no longer work. So any page I visit where the box would be deselected now has a check or {x} in the box when it should be getting removed.

I feel like installing the previous or older version won't help at this point, but I'm not beyond trying; since they had this issue in v149 and fixed it as a bug, maybe I need to go back to something like V155 or so (shrug).

All I know is it's really frustrating to not just be able to search where I'm accustomed to typing and selecting return only to get nothing. It's like they sabotaged themselves or something.

I tried uk.yahoo.com and just through in "Kevin Smith" for fun, and I got search results. us.yahoo.com redirects to yahoo.com's main page with news and such, not the nice clean blank screen with just the search box that uk.yahoo.com has; so maybe I'll make uk.yahoo.com the page that opens when I open a new tab,.... that might be a reasonable work around.

Nevermind. I when to uk.yahoo.com a second time and it through me at their main page with news and such. So I only got the nice clean search bar once. Darn. AND, the Yahoo UK page doesn't have the Yahoo Scout AI icon on it, so when you select return when entering your search text it indeed throws the about:blank tab, or it might give results. Seems random.

Yahoo is not among the built–in search providers (at least not in most of the regional markets I'm familiar with) so that's correct it most likely comes from an addon — and such addons tend to do "extra" unwanted things, or of course break if unmaintained. You can see from your addon list if there's anything from Yahoo, click through the links to its listing, check for updates, and leave compatibility notes to the developer in an addon review comment.

If you want to remove the addon completely and just use the pure search settings functionality to Add or remove a search engine in Firefox the URL pattern to enter would be:

  https://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?p=%s

and you don't need any third–party thingamajig.

The blank results page would be concerning, as Yahoo had blocked lots of users once already marking them as robots the first time the results opened, so hopefully it's not repeating again with the current signatures. They were able to roll back within a day last time, but they'd need to know the details first I guess so any observations are welcome if it feels broken even beyond any addon use.
