Will Firefox continue to support older MacOS versions?

more options

With another new MacOS update coming soon, I'm curious to know whether Firefox will continue to support older MacOS versions like Mojave and Catalina. I have an almost perfectly functional MacBook Pro first released in 2012 and curious whether Firefox will make it easier or harder to continue using it.

Over the years, Firefox has discontinued support for many older Mac OS versions. That may have been due to needing to streamline the code base by removing backwards compatibility workarounds , or perhaps there were other reasons (I haven't researched that).

I don't know when Mozilla might release the final version for Mojave (10.14). Here is the current/recent status:

  • Currently supported: 10.12, 10.13, 10.14, 10.15, ...
  • Final release 10/14/2021 (78.15.0esr): 10.9, 10.10 and 10.11
  • Final release 4/18/2017 (45.9.0esr): 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8

Firefox Mac OS X 10.9, 10.10 and 10.11 users https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-mac-osx-users-esr

macOS 10.12 has been the current minimum since Fx 79.0

It's possible macOS 10.13and 10.14 may be get dropped at some point in future even though they are currently unsupported by Apple. At that point the most current Firefox ESR version that still supports them will be served to those users much like Fx 78.x.0 ESR was served to the the EOL macOS 10.9-10.11 users.

So the eventual Extended Support Release ( ESR -- I had to look that up) will offer security-only updates for an additional couple of years or so, without updating new Firefox features. Do I have that right?

ESR is normally meant for Enterprise users in mind as it is focused more on stability with allowed security and stability fixes.

The point is Mozilla will likely serve the most current ESR channel version to such users so they will get a Firefox version with security fixes for a some months (as much as say fourteen months) still depending on timing.

The current ESR versions is Fx 91.13.0 ESR and Fx 102.2.0 ESR. The old Fx 91 ESR will be EOL when Fx 105.0 and 102.3.0 ESR is Released. The Fx 102x.0 ESR is planned for up to Fx 102.15.0 ESR and the Fx 115.0 ESR will start at same time as Fx 102.13.0 ESR release.

The duration of continuing updates may vary, but would be up to one year (there is a new ESR every year).
