After Firefox did an automatic update, I couldn't access the program. Why?

Firefox did an automatic update on my computer. After that was complete, I could not open the program and had to download a new version. Updates aren't helpful if they cause the program to vanish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Does anyone else know why this happened?
