Right now, having just started Firefox, it is ticking along at 0.5 to 15% of CPU time, depending what is going on.

About 2-3 hours from now, it will be consuming 40-60% CPU time and I will be getting this message in the title bar every 5 seconds. It will spend more time not responding than responding. The only way to fix it will be to shut it down and start over.

Please don't advise the standard troubleshooting for this problem. I've done it all. I've started in safe mode. I've disabled add-ons one at a time (I don't have that many). I've cleared cache and history. I've reset the browser. Nothing works.

This problem started with an update about 6 to 9 months ago. That's how long I've been trying to solve it. I need nonstandard solutions since the standard ones are useless.

Ok, you asked for non-conventional.....

Please remove : Safe Browsing Version 4 (temporary add-on) 1.0.0 (sbv4-gradual-rollout@mozilla.com) It is a Mozilla experiment, called 'Shield Studies'. Without even knowing it, you may have volunteered for this Mozilla experiment. Would you go to : Options => Privacy & Security => under 'Data Collection and Use' : Did you uncheck : 'Allow Firefox to install and run studies ' or is it checked  ?

To check if you are enrolled in these studies : Type in the address bar about:studies

Any extensions that you see listed there, you can either disable or remove, just like this Safe Browsing version 4 (at the end of the experiment they will be disabled anyway). See for further information : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/shield

See if Multi-Processor Support is turned on. Multi-processor support feature may be disabled depending on your setup (it was for me) - you can check this by launching Firefox, then enter in "about:support" in the address bar; near the bottom, you should see a heading that says: "Multiprocess Windows", then look at the value next to it. If it says "0/1", then that means it's disabled. If see o/2 or higher it is enabled.

You need to reverse the settings. You can try to modify multi-process settings to see if this has effect. You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue. Copy/paste below into the search bar in about:config

set dom.ipc.processCount to 1 if it is currently set to a higher value (4) disable multi-process windows in Firefox

You can disable multi-process windows in Firefox by setting these prefs to false on the about:config page. Copy/paste below into the search bar in about:config ie: browser.tabs.remote.autostart CHANGE to false.

browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false

OK, did most of that. We'll see how it goes. Right now, so far so good.

Not upgrading to FF57 any time soon as it borks essential addons. I only use 6 addons but webextensions destroys 5 of them. Right now, the only thing keeping me away from Chrome full time is their idiotic shrinking tabs.

Most extensions are updating for version 57. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ new page/layout search for your extensions.
