address book does not come up in message window and can not add address list.

when I open a window to write a message the address side bar is there but no addresses and when i click on the drop down no options occur so I have had to copy and paste from main address book something has changed in the last up date which I believe caused this. Any help would be appreciated. I have 3 address books.
