This was addressed in the archive post: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/949954

I brought this up now, because I had the same issue and that archived posting provided an answer that still works today.

Firefox developers failed to include a search result parameter that allows the user to see the full file path to the link, from parent folder to the link listing any subfolders along the way.

Because of the absence of this information, any bookmark search becomes completely useless as to wanting to know what folder contains the link.

The archived post provided a link to an extension for Firefox/Waterfox that allows the user to see the complete path to the link.

The extension is: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/show-parent-folder/

The archived post is now 3 yrs old, but this extension is up to date for the current version of FireFox/WaterFox browser and works perfectly. (No, I am not associate to the developer of the extension).

I thought by putting this back to the top of the Support list can help many others who have not found that archived post.

Cheers!

Open the bookmark in a new tab/window. Then press the bookmark star to open its properties.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that does not work to show the file path. All it shows are the most recent folders accessed to save bookmarks and the file structure it does list is not marked as to which one. Again it is where it was last opened.

That may help if the link was recent enough, but usually its a link that is months old but need to locate it because I cannot remember where it was saved.

The solution I listed above is still the best and easiest.

You can use this method to locate a bookmark:

  1. open the bookmark in a tab with a left-click or a middle-click
  2. click the blue star on the Navigation toolbar to open the "Edit This Bookmark" window
  3. click the Down arrow at the far right of the Folder field to open the folder tree
  4. use the scroll bar or the mouse scroll wheel until you see the folder where this bookmark is stored (do not click in the tree area)

You can do this in Offline mode (File > Work Offline) to prevent opening this link.
