I get "not responding" very often when I try to delete messages...I also get it often when just trying to open or process an email. CAUSE: McAfee

I use Yahoo IMAP mail. No problem with that.

I estimate that 50% of the time when I delete a message or messages in TB I get a "not responding" error message...after maybe 30 seconds it clears itself...most annoying.

I also get the same message less often when opening or moving or otherwise processing an email. Again, most annoying.

Any solutions?

What is your anti-virus software?

not using any...every thing is turned off...initially I was getting interference from the McAfee that came with the computer...it was trying to "read" every email that came through. I turned it off as well as the Windows 10 security stuff.

Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/change-startup-settings-in-windows-10#v1h=tab01

Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Does the problem go away?

It took me lot of grief to get Windows 10 to run in safe mode with networking...don't know what the issue with it is...anyhow, got it running in safe mode both in Windows and Thunderbird.

Will run like this for a few days and let you know...in the meantime, if there are no problems running like this, what will that tell us?

Windows safe mode disables anti-virus software.

That you're still running some sort of security/anti-virus software that does interfere with Thunderbird. My best guess is McAfee. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#McAfee

As I said initially, I am not running McAfee...it was not even on my list of programs.

However, I did download and run McAfee's program for its removal and it seemed to find bits and pieces of software and removed them.

Now I am back in normal mode. While running in safe mode I had no problems with "not responding".

We will see what happens now.

If not McAfee, then there's another 'security' software running. May be something like Windows Defender?

So far since noon today when I replied, no problems... could it have been some remnant software from McAfee?...when their removal program was processing I saw a lot of stuff (acronyms) being cleaned off.

All the Windows stuff is off as far as I know...I keep getting messages to turn the firewall back on.

Will let you know in a day or so if there are no more issues...sooner if there are.

You should have the Windows firewall enabled. That's not typically a problem.

I am trying to work with one variable at a time...if the present positive condition continues for several days, I will re-enable it.
