I was switching from Outlook to Thunderbird and not being familiar with the tab layout made a dumb mistake, I thought I was deleting a tab with filtered spam but instead I selected all in my unified inbox and hit send to trash. It dumped about 4000 into trash that were not important but when that was empty it started pulling older email off the IMAP servers and filling the trash up again. I have about 28000 emails (I assume that makes me a hoarder) about 200 of which need to be kept. I took Thunderbird offline, deleted the Windows app, redownloaded and as soon as I added the accounts back in it started deleting again. Is there anyway to stop the delete all inbox transfer or do I just need to go back to Outlook or another email client?

I'm presently running TB 147.1esr on a Windows 11 system. I have archived mail by years (2020, 2021, etc.) on an IMAP server and I have defined a Local Folders entry. I want to move some archived years off the server onto the local folders. What is the best way to do this? I searched for documentation, but couldn't find an article on that subject.

Hi all. My mail account reached 50 GB (it's too much) and this is what I plan to do:

1) Download all emails to TB 2) Remove emails older then 1 year from server (for now I don't know how to do that) 3) Keep all emails in TB and use it as my local database - if I'm looking for some old mails then I will go to TB

Important information - daily I don't use TB. I log to my mail via web gui.

The question is - what TB will do when it connects to server and notices that older emails are deleted. Will TB also delete them locally? It's not what I want - my goal is to keep old emails locally. Should I disconnect TB from server after downloading all email by changing credentials?

Please tell me what you think about that plan. Do you see better way to store old emails and keep mailbox slim on the server? I want to fit in 2-5 GB.

By the way do you have idea how to delete mails older then 1 year from server? I have shell access.

Does TBird support plus addressing?

Scenario: I want to reply to email sent "To: markfilipak+joe@...". To do that successfully, in the "Write" dialog, I have to click on "From", scroll down to "Customize From Address...", click it, and add "+joe". (There is a menu alternative: "Options","Customize From Address...".)

If I forget to do that, then my reply does not have "+joe"; it goes out "From: markfilipak@...".

The Issue: When Joe replies to _that_ message, it does not have "+joe", so Joe's reply is trashed. (It's trashed because a filter I wrote automatically deletes messages that do not have "To: markfilipak+<something>@..." in the header.

The sensible way to handle plus addressing is for TBird to recognize plus addressing and to automatically make my "From" header from Joe's "To" header. That way, "+joe" will always be there.

Is there a way to do that?

Thanks Folks! -- Mark.

I have been using Mozilla Thunderbird for decades and they have even contributed a small amount of money to Thunderbird periodically. Just within the last two or three days all of a sudden I have been unable to send emails with my phone. I receive emails, but I do not send them. So I opened up a laptop where I did not have Thunderbird and set it up properly through Spectrum using the incoming and outgoing servers as mail.twc.com. and yes, just like on my phone. I continue to receive new emails, but even with the laptop I was unable to send an email. I received the message"send message error sending a message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to outgoing server smtp mail.twc.com was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again."I contacted Spectrum twice and both times they had me try to send a message through their Web server spectrum.net and that message did go through. Of course then their response is that this has to be a problem with the third-party app meaning Mozilla Thunderbird, and they can’t help with that at all. I sure would appreciate some help because I hate to walk away from Thunderbird as well as change my email address after all of these decades.

This has been happening for a long long time - probably a few years' worth of versions. I have just put up with it... currently running Tbird 147 and it just happened.

When editing an email (either the body or the Subject), if you use the backspace button (the one that deletes to the left) to delete some text sometimes the cursor will incorrectly be positioned about 5 or 6 characters further left than it should.

For example, if I had the text: "Quick brown fox jumps over the moon"

If I were to highlight "fox" in the above example, and hit backspace, I would expect the cursor to end up positioned between the remaining spaces after 'brown' ( pipe symbol here is meant to represent the cursor position): "brown | jumps"

But instead what happens is that the cursor ends up somewhere among/before the word "brown". It's always further left than it should be, by 5 or 6 characters.

I believe it only happens when highlighting multiple characters and then hitting backspace. It may be more (only?) prevalent when editing/replying to an existing email. (But I'm still only editing the new portions that I add at the top of the email; I'm almost never editing in amongst the original quoted email content.)

I also haven't ever been able to figure out how to make it happen, sorry. It is just random...It will happen once in an email, but then not again. But it happens frequently - 3-6 times a day perhaps. (Depends on how many emails I am editing.  :) )

I don't believe that I have noticed this issue if I were using the Delete button (deletes things to the right). I don't think it happens when backspacing one character at a time...but it might. I also use Option-Backspace to delete whole words at a time (instead of highlighting the word); not exactly sure if it happens only if highlighting a word, or only if Option-Backspace, or single key press... sorry, it is so random and unexpected that I don't have more specifics.

I have been using Thunderbird for many years. I just got a new computer and installed Thunderbird onto it. I have several email accounts for personal, business and clubs so this makes it easy to keep track of. I have some gmail accounts and 3 different yahoo accounts. Now when I get an email to one yahoo account it prorogates to the other two. This never happened on the old computer do you have any idea how this happened, and more importantly, how do I stop it?
