not downloading the downloads

FireFox does not actually download the download it says it is downloading or says is downloaded.

After the download (any: img / other files) I am not able to access the file from the Downloads Window. This seems to be a logical thing because the download in windows explorer (in the actual download folder of my choice) is not there. FireFox says the download is finished while there is nothing really downloaded.

I've reinstalled the total FireFox 10.0.2. That is first a deinstall while not saving any settings. Then reinstall. I am using extensions : Firebug 1.9.1 and Web Developer 1.1.9

Also did I follow the "Help - info steps - for reinitializing the default download location" (maybe it could have been that, but that didn't solve my problem. That is the same as the 1st reply below. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/unable+to+download+or+save+files Doesnt do the job for me.

Other browsers also don't give me this problem. (IE, Opera, Chrome, Safari) So I don't think it's a Windows 7 thing. Though FireFox is my default browser and I hope I will use it as my default browser in the future.

Last two days I've taken these steps again. (as mentioned in the 1st reply answer) Again no better result. Deïnstalled - Without saving settings. Then deleting the folders that still exist named Mozilla (in the program dir and in within the appsdata dir. Local and Roaming) Reïnstalled. Run in Save mode. Firewall check . None of the above solved the problem.

The isssue is not file specific. All downloaded files or programs give the same problem. Still the Download window shows a file downloaded. When I then double click the file nothing happens. If I rightclick it the shortcut menu shows a grayed out first option that says "Open". And as mentioned before the file doesn't exist in the folder that I saved it to.

I think it must be a Firefox specific issue because my other browsers don't have a similar problem. I can download and save with them. But Firefox is always been my favorite default browser. If it has something to do with Firewall or Virusscan setting my guess is that the same problem should exist in other browsers as well. Which is not.

I hope someone out there has another thing for me to try solve this problem. Thanks

I solved my own problem After getting used to surf with FF and then use some other browser for an occasional download I accidentaly saw something.

In my Web Developer extension tool I somewhere noticed a CSS error message about a failure of parsing some stuf to my AVG add-on in dir..... blabla bla...

AVG ?? The damned thing should be gone more than half a year ago. After encountering some problems I guessed could be due to using AVG or ZoneLabs , I deïnstalled both and started using Microsoft Security Essentials.

So after the error message above I opened my Windows Explorer and started hunting for AVG. There it was. Still after using the special removal tool called "avg_remover_stf_x64_2012_1796" (you can google on that) there was a directory called C:\program files (x86)\AVG\.... with some folders in there called Firefox and Firefox4 .

Since I am not using the AVG anymore I cut the folder and moved it (I didn't dare to delete the thing, just to be sure. I can delete it over 3 weeks if in meantime no desaster happens). I moved the total AVG directory (folder) to a different drive.

After a full pc restart I was allmost there. Images did download but the .csv files didn't.

I followed 2 extra steps which are described in detail in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/unable%20to%20download%20or%20save%20files (see the above reply). These 2 steps are:

  1. I used the - Reset the download folder - option
  2. I used the - Reset download actions for all file types - option.

After these I did change the action to be taken on downloading a .csv file . I changed the action from opening with Excel to just Download the file. This is also explained in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing%20file%20types.

That did it for me. Thank you for your help and interest, and I hope some of the other 5 having this problem are helped with my information.

Thanks,

Several things can cause that:

If downloads are not showing in your Downloads window:

  • Check this setting: Firefox button > Options > Options (or Tools > Options) > Privacy > check "Remeber download history"
  • Do not clear download history when using Clear Recent History or automatically clear in when closing/exiting Firefox
