Can I register a WebExtension in registry using the path to the .XPI package or does it have to be unzipped on the machine?

I currently install my WebExtension (Officially signed) by creating a Registry entry under the Extensions folder and providing it the path to the UNZIPPED extension folder.

Could I instead leave the extension as an .XPI package and provide the path to the package within the registry?
