The top menu bar (Firefox,File, Edit, View etc) does not function when the firefox browser is open?open

I'm running a MacBook Pro with 10.7.5 This problem came on suddenly as it was working fine before. All the button function within the browser work except the very top menu items.ie Apple logo/ Firefox/Edit/View/History. Has anyone had this problem and know how to fix it? Any advice much appreciated. thank you.
